I know what you’re thinking – whoa, another blog, just what the world needs… And I really can’t hold the irony of that remark against you. There’s a plethora of blogs out there, and I neither have the time nor the patience to figure out whether this is going to be any different from the bulk of them, but I hope so. I mean, we hope so.
Since we bumped into each other some five years ago, Peter and I have had a never-ending discussion about pop culture, and lately we’ve become aware of this so-called ‘Internet’ phenomenon that everybody keeps talking about. We’re still not entirely convinced that it’s not just another fad bound to fade into obscurity like the yo-yo and electric boogie, but we’re willing to give it a try and actually publish our thoughts on whatever’s on our mind in this digital forum.
The aim is to share our personal views on and interpretations of movies, music, literature, and anything else worthy of the ‘pop culture’ label – sometimes, lo and behold, even with the ‘pop’ part missing. There will be no such thing as a main theme or focus apart from that – we’re just as eager to discuss a current blockbuster, a semi-obscure rock album from the 80s, or a literary classic published a century ago.
Our general idea is to pitch thoughts about a certain topic back and forth and see where our associations will take us, and if we can entice any readers to chip in with intelligent and/or funny comments we’d be thrilled. We’d like to believe that we’ll be able to attract an intelligent and well-mannered audience and we have no desire to interact with people unable to behave themselves. In other words, there will be no reason to waste your breath on the kind of remarks that basically aim to communicate that ‘bullying other people on the net makes me feel better about my own pitiful and socially retarded self,’ if you happen to be that kind of person (and we believe you aren’t). Such comments will be violently ignored.
Anyway, among our first topics will be the hyper-hype of the current ‘The Dark Knight’ and a explanation of why ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ is a downright horrendous piece of garbage.
One last thing: the name of the blog. We had to call it something, and ‘The Cockroach Daily’ was honestly the first thing that was thrown on the table. The updates will hardly be daily, more likely weekly, and we will probably never ever find a reason to talk about cockroaches at all. Welcome to our geek-a-torium.
